For about 15 Years, we’ve covered the story of Felix Garcia. This is his annual Holiday message. I would like to thank Pat Bliss for standing with Felix all these years. He calls her Mom. I would also like to thank HEARD for their support of Felix and many other Deaf inmates.
I visited Felix for about two hours on Christmas Day. The good news is that the Virginia DOC has offered Felix the opportunity to transfer to their Model Camp program, due to his exemplary record. More than just a program, the Model Camp is a forward-thinking philosophy rooted in two core beliefs: that incarcerated individuals can make meaningful choices, and that behavior should guide opportunity. By pairing positive incentives with fair, consistent accountability, this model promotes safety, personal growth, and a more respectful environment for everyone. Furthermore, participation can help with parole consideration.

The HEARD organization had donated some money, and Felix used that for new clothes and a pair of boots. I commented on how serene he appeared, and he replied, “I am. I like where I am in my life. I just want to be free.” We wrote notes back and forth and played a card game called Phase10. Out of several games, Felix won most, but I did win one. He has been assigned a new job that he’s very happy with. He is in charge of the laundry room in the medical building. He works alone and does all the laundry in giant industrial washers and dryers. This is Felix at his best. Put him in charge of a project, let him work alone, and he will find a way to increase productivity.

To all of his supporters on DeafInPrison.org, Felix sends the following greeting. “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. They say this is the time to be happy and merry. Well, I, for one, am happy and merry. I have a lot to be thankful for, and mostly it’s because of you. So, as this year comes to a close, look back and see all the good things Christ has brought our way. We can make a difference, so thank you for being my friend.”
With that, I pray you had a meaningful Christmas that honored the reason for this season. So much to look forward to in 2026. That is what keeps our lives going—hope!
Sincerely,
Pat Bliss
