According to Reuters, Colorado’s prison system chief administrator, was shot and killed on Tuesday night. Police suspect that his position in the prison system may have been the motive. This occurred within a few hours of the Governor’s signing of a new gun control law, in response to the increased number of deadly shootings in the state.

Tom Clements was 58 years old. Two years ago, he was appointed Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Corrections. He was shot at his home, outside of Monument, Colorado, south of Denver.

There was no sign of robbery or attempted break and entry, but police say they don’t believe the shooting to be random. No suspects have been identified.

The morning immediately following the shooting, Colorado Governor, John Hickenlooper signed a gun control bill into law, that would extend background checks to private gun sales. The cost burden for the checks would fall on the buyers. The bill also limits the size of magazine clips.
